The November update was originally available via the MCT (Media Creation Tool), but the company decided that future installs should be through Windows Update. People can still download Windows 10 [Build 10240] using the MCT tool if they wish. The November update will be delivered via Windows Update.
As always, the new build will download automatically to all Insiders who are part of the Fast ring of updates, but you can go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update to manually download Windows 10 build 10596 on your PC. Here are all the known issues for Windows 10 build 10586.
Microsoft today has made available for download its first major update to Windows 10 to users around the globe. Windows 10 version 1511 Build 10586 November Update as its called brings plenty of improvements to the operating system, not least of which is a performance boost that will be a welcome addition for those complaining of problems in that regard since the jump to Windows 10.
Today, we came to know that Microsoft removed the ability to directly install Windows 10 Version 1511 from scratch! Everything related to the latest build 10586 of Windows 10 - the Media Creation Tool, Kits and Tools (SDK, WDK, ADK), Mobile Emulators, ISOs of the build from Tech Bench and Media Creation Tool - is moved to Windows Update. The old links which downloaded the updated build now lead to resources related to the older Windows 10 RTM build 10240.
The November 2015 update was originally available via the MCT (Media Creation Tool), but the company decided that future installs should be through Windows Update. People can still download Windows 10 [Build 10240] using the Media Creation Tool if they wish. The November update will be delivered via Windows Update.
There is something definitely wrong with this company. I see no reason to make everyone use Windows Update to download TH2. It also means the November update will have to be downloaded individually on every PC running Windows 10. A single, updated ISO cannot be used to update multiple PCs. Also, without Windows 10 build 10586, you will lose the ability to activate the OS with your Windows 7 or Windows 8 key. Windows 10 RTM users will end up wasting a lot of time and disk space with an additional upgrade which could have been bypassed earlier.
It might be that Microsoft discovered a major regression or bug in TH2 final build or it might be that they are tracking downloads/installations of the RTM build and therefore want to continue making everyone download the RTM build. Nevertheless, pulling the updated files after making them available without any transparency or explanation provided to customers looks very unprofessional.
Update: Microsoft has restored all downloads with an updated build, Windows 10 build 10586.14. Microsoft explained that the previous release had a bug. More details here: Windows 10 build 10586.14 available, all downloads are restored.
Sounds like when they found out 10586 was changing privacy settings they freaked out a bit and pulled the update in their panic. Understandable considering the crap storm they would have gotten if the press had found out about this issue. They are already having enough bad press with Windows 10 privacy as it is.
Windows 10 November Update (also known as version 1511 and codenamed "Threshold 2") is the first major update to Windows 10 and the second version of the operating system. It carries the build number 10.0.10586.
Recently Microsoft released November Update for Windows 10 users which is actually a new build 10586 of Windows 10. November Update is also known as Version 1511, Threshold 2 and Fall Update. When Microsoft released Windows 10 RTM build, it featured White titlebars in program windows which was not looking good and hurting eyes of people. We posted solutions to get rid of White titlebars but now you can enable colored titlebars using a built-in option present in Settings app.
Yeah, I think we got lucky. I've seen articles suddenly show up regarding this issue as people were trying to guess why build 10586 was temporarily pulled from Techbench and Media Creation Tool and they reverted it to July's RTM version.
Now, Microsoft re-released 10586 along with a new cumulative update (KB3120677) and said they pulled it due to a relatively minor issue where people upgrading from 10240 would get 4 privacy-related settings reset.
Anyway, for now we have two workarounds: either update from build 10240, or join the insider program and get build 11082 (note that it has a known issue of not having a dialog box when transferring files using windows explorer).
I downloaded KB3124200 from the catalog and manually installed it; windows now shows it as installed. Any attempt to prevent bitlocker reverting to software encryption for system disks in group policy STILL simply results in it sulking and refusing to encrypt (Crucial MX200 1TB)
Microsoft had recently updated the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, the official way to download Windows 10 ISO to download the latest version of Windows 10 November Update with the general availability of Windows 10 November Update. However, a week later around November 21st, the ISO files of Windows 10 with latest November Update changes incorporated was pulled. Instead, the Windows 10 RTM ISO is offered.
The product and file version of Media Creation Tool of Windows 10 was updated to 10.0.10586.0 to reflect the version of Windows 10 November Update, but has since changed back to 10.0.10240.16480, the version number of Windows 10 RTM.
According to Microsoft official statement, no specific reason was given for the removal of Windows 10 Build 10586 from various official sources, except that they want you to wait (as Windows 10 Build 10586 will only be offered at least 31 days after Windows 10 Build 10240 installed) to upgrade via Windows Update, which will roll out the latest build over time:
A Windows 10 build that is released to the Insider's Slow Ring normally means the ISO will also be made available for download so that clean installs can be accomplished. However, according to Gabe Aul, it may still be a couple of days before the ISO is available on the Windows Insider site for download.
